A Chinese adoption gift celebrates our red thread connections
A Chinese adoption gift celebrates our new red thread additions to our forever families and shows our love for them.
Our adoption gift favorites list includes scrapbooks, photo albums, Chinese dolls and more.
When we brought our daughter home from China, we received many gifts that were generic to all babies such as bibs, sleepers, baby blankets and such.
However, the one gift that meant the most to me is a copy of the poem Legacy of an Adopted Child. My friend, who also is an adoptive parent, had it beautifully framed and mounted. It hangs where we all can see and read it as we go by.
Legacy of an Adopted Child
Once there were two women who never knew each other.
One you do not remember, the other you call Mother.
Two different lives shaped to make you one.
One became your guiding star, the other became your sun.
The first one gave you life, and the second taught you to live it.
The first gave you a need for love. The second was there to give it.
One gave you a nationality. The other gave you a name.
One gave you a talent. The other gave you aim.
One gave you emotions. The other calmed your fears.
One saw your first sweet smile. The other dried your tears.
One sought for you a home that she could not provide.
The other prayed for a child and her hope was not denied.
And now you ask me, through your tears,
the age-old question unanswered through the years.
Heredity or environment, which are you a product of?
Neither, my darling. Neither.
Just two different kinds of Love.

Our adoptions have never been secrets. We want our children to know about their heritage. Although this poem does not speak directly to Chinese child adoptions, it addresses the universal question of all adoptions. How could I say it any better?
A Chinese adoption gift can also take the form of donations to others who are following their red threads to their children. The best way we found to make those donations was through our agency’s Eternal Families program. Since our agency is a non-profit agency, the donation is tax deductible and anonymous.
When we think of Chinese adoption gifts, we naturally think of the ones we received from many family and friends. However, I can’t help but think about those children left in the orphanages. I wish they could receive adoption gifts. I figure the best thing I can do for them is to help make their lives richer while they are still there.
Someone sponsored my daughter
the Baby Sisters Infant Nurture Program through Half the Sky Foundation.
Sponsoring other children still in orphanages is the least I can do.
Supporting an organization such as Half the Sky is a gift to those without forever families. These programs are proven effective. The best reports are the ones received from the children themselves. The children in the programs are learning and growing. The evidence is seen in their work and their smiles.
Receiving a Chinese adoption gift from friends and family is wonderful. This kind of gift shows the love we have for our children.
Giving a Chinese adoption gift to someone else hoping to adopt is a way to share that love with that person's forever family.
Remembering those left behind is our Chinese adoption gift to the children. They may never have their own forever family. Hopefully, however, they will know they are supported and loved by a lot of forever families all over the world.
